Our Mission Statement
The mission of Greater New Zion Baptist Church is to empower people to use their passions and faith; to be in the presence of Christ within our community and in the world.
According to church records, Zion Baptist Church was established in 1927 with the following members: Otha Mills, Minnie Mills, B.T. Talley, Mattie Talley, Walt Collins, Minnie Collins, Ben Smith and Margaret Smith. Rev. A. B. Roberts served as pastor for one year.
Rev. Hubert was then called to pastor Zion Baptist Church in 1929. He was pastor to Pine Grove Church in the morning and Zion Baptist Church in the evening.
Rev. Parker was called to pastor in 1930. Under his leadership, construction of the first church building was started at the site of our present church, but because of the depression it was never completed. Services were held in the Brickton School.
the latter part of 1930, Rev. Lester Suber became pastor and served
faithfully until 1934. The
construction of a church building began in 1934. The
church was constructed from three disassembled wooden houses, that were located
in Jergen Hill, Hendersonville, North Carolina.
The official name was Zion
John Suber, served as assistant pastor for six years, and became pastor in
1935. Rev. Suber served New Zion as an outstanding leader until his death in 1962. Rev. Kenneth F. Lofton was called to pastor New Zion following the death of Reverend
John Suber. During Rev. Lofton's leadership the
church family deemed it necessary to build a new church, which presently houses
our church family today. The name was
changed to Greater New Zion Baptist Church.
of 1972, Reverend Levonia C. Ray, Sr. was called to pastor Greater New Zion for
38 years. He served faithfully with his
wife Sis. Louise, children Ray Jr. Kevin and Sherry. In
1979, the fellowship hall was constructed.
In 1984 a new choir loft, baptistery pool and air conditioner were
installed. Two new organs and a piano
were also purchased. Under
Rev. Ray’s leadership, Rev. Odell Suber Sr., Rev. William Whitfield, Rev.
David Suber, Rev. Carlos McKoy, and Rev. Keith Knox were licensed and ordained
as ministers, all of whom are now pastoring local congregations.
Wilber Hines became Interim Pastor of Greater New Zion Baptist Church in
2010. He was installed as our pastor
November 2011 along with his wife Minister Sharon Hines. Under Elder Hines leadership the GNZ Resource
was completely renovated. Elder Hines
served as pastor until February 2017.
The congregation of Greater New Zion Baptist Church is very pleased that on July 22, 2017, Bishop
